Do You Need Any Stone Building Work Carried Out In The Scottish Borders?

One of the most common reasons people need to speak to us here at Scottish Borders Stonemasons is for the replacement of broken or eroded stones.

Broken Stones
The most common causes of broken stones in buildings and structures is movement, settlement and impact. Our stone buildings move all the time, and most of the time mortar and materials choice ensure that individual stones can handle this. Most of the time. You will find more times than not that it is the longer horizontal pieces that suffer most, particularly cills and lintols. Stones can also be broken by impact, eg vehicle collision.

Eroded Stones
The most common causes of eroded masonry is weather and road salts. The weather takes its toll on relatively sandstone in particular. The winter months are especially hard on stone with wet masonry freezing overnight and disintegrating the stone.

Stone erosion is also caused by the very caustic salt used on our roads being sprayed up onto walls and buildings by passing vehicles. This very strong alkaline solution aggressively breaks down stone and lime mortars causing all sorts of problems.

We are experts in the replacement of damaged or weathered masonry. On a typical job such as replacing a broken stone lintol for example, we will measure the existing lintol and acquire a new piece of stone this exact size and colour. We will then copy any surface finish or detail the stone may have such as splays or borders etc. Once completed, we will cut out the damaged stone piece and replace with the new one, all firmly bedded with a durable lime mortar.

We carry out this same process for any size or type of stone including lintols, window cills, mullions, rybates, jambstones, cornices, ashlar, random rubble etc. etc.
